Research that Benefits Children and Families—Uplifting Stories

HighScope Perry Preschool Study: One of the most well known research projects. Looks at the lives of children living in poverty and at risk for failing in school. They began with 123 children, at ages 3 and 4, the children (subjects) term from our class readings this week, received a high quality preschool program (High Scope, 2013). "The preschool was provided each weekday morning in 2.5-hour sessions taught by certified public school teachers with at least a bachelor’s degree. The average child-teacher ratio was 6:1. The curriculum emphasized active learning, in which the children engaged in activities that (i) involved decision making and problem solving, and (ii) were planned, carried out, and reviewed by the children themselves, with support from adults" (Coalition for Evidence Based Policy, 2012). In interviewing the preschoolers as adults  They had higher earnings and were more likely to hold a job. They committed fewer crimes and had a higher rate of high school graduation.

  1. Joy,

The High Scope Perry Preschool Study was very interesting and informative as it emphasized the importance of play and children being active participants in their own learning. It also stressed the value of positive social interactions for a child’s well-being. Play, hands-on learning, and positive relationships all are important components for healthy development.

  2. Joy,

I have also read about the High Scope Perry Preschool Study and was astounded by the research and results. The results just reinforced my philosophy about early childhood education and what it should look like! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to revisit this study!

  3. Hi Joy,

HighScope Perry Preschool Study is very well known. Starting children in research at a young age and with small amounts for teachers to teach will always have a positive effect on children. Getting the basic background you need especially, children who are in poverty can teach them to strive in education. This type of a research project dealing with children, who have received a quality preschool program, only shows that any child that has the encouragement in school at a young age will succeed. Thank you for this positive research happening for children.
